Gorkha Saanjh

The buzz had been around for several weeks regarding "Gorkha Saanjh".. "Saanjh" in Nepali means evening, or dusk. This was to be the first full scale Nepali cultural fest to be organized in Bangalore. The day was fixed for 14 September 2008 - and we waited for the day with lot of expectations. The venue was St. John's Auditorium, Koramangala, Bangalore and the programme was slated to begin at 4:30 PM. Our friend Anisha Chhetri was participating in the show and that also happened to be a really strong point for us not going to miss the show for anything.

The event was planned, designed and presented by Bharatiya Gorkhali Welfare Association
(BGWA for short) - a welfare organization for us Gorkhas residing in Bangalore.

We reached the venue on time - it was a pleasant evening with a slight drizzle to welcome the audience. The show started a good one hour behind schedule - but we Indians are used to such delays so no complaints there!

The show, overall, was really good. It was a really nice feeling to be watching our cultural dances and songs on stage - why, there was even a skit which was enacted to near perfection! The feeling of it all was overwhelming! Anisha sang her song very beautifully and it only made the evening better for us, her ardent supporters. Also meeting up with loads of school buddies with whom I'd lost touch over the years, and some whose names I did not recall, was another really nice thing that happend at the "Saanjh" for me. The history of BGWA and its 27 years of existence was something I came to know only at the show - I had thought the BGWA was a very new organization...! Also, came to highlight were the achievements of some of our Gorkhali brothers - for instance, one of the Gladrags Man Hunt semi-finalist 2008 was a Gorkhali.

All in all, a brilliant concept. The only regret I had was of not performing at the show. Next time, I hope to get Green Room Boxes to perform there and do some rocking songs! And of course, my friend Sachin has agreed to write a script and organize a skit for the next such cultural nite. So for the next such nite, we await in anticipation and to the "Saanjh" that set, we cherish the beautiful memories of it in reminiscence.
