One fine day

Driving down the slopes of Nandi hills at around 110 kmph, the wind playing on our slightly tipsy faces felt amazing. There were four of us in the car - my colleagues and good friends Sumiran and Anant, my team leader Sam, and I. We were returning back to Bangalore after a day of fun n frolic at Nandi Hills, a place on the outskirts of Bangalore. We'd had a good amount of beer right from the time we started from Bangalore (hope none of the traffic police people will read this else Sam, you're in deep sh*t!), then some more at the venue of the team outing i.e. Nandi Hills, and we were still sipping on our favorite cans of KF beer on the downhill ride.
Suddenly we remembered that there was the second finals going on in Australia right now... India had won the first of the three finals, and winning this one too would mean a tight slap across the face of the arrogant Aussies... Oh how we would love that! So with great expectations we switched on the car radio, and tuned in to the All India Radio's pathetic Hindi commentary describing the ongoings in the faraway cricket field of Gabba.
The commentator described the scene to be tense. The Aussies were down to their last wicket, and Irfan Pathan had been given the responsibility to bowl the last over. They only needed 13 runs to win. We listened in silence, with beer breath passing between our lips and our hands clutching on to our respective cans in tight grips. Oh yeah, it was fun... especially adding to that the thrill of speeding downhill at breakneck speed!
Then there was an even tense moment when James Hopes, the batsman hit the ball into the air.. it was like a scene from Matrix, as I recall now. Silence....and the commentator's next words literally made us explode. The dude screamed into the microphone that the wicket had been taken, and we joined in from our places in the little car and whooped for joy..! There was a couple behind us in a motorcycle and when they crossed us, they looked at us with an expression as if to say "What the f**k's going on?!?!" Quite understandable, I'd say cos we braked in the middle of the road! From 110kmph to 0 in 2 seconds flat!
There was hugging and cheering and some more bottles of beer that were opened. Our friends following us in another car stopped too, and joined in the celebrations.
It felt awesome, it felt like heaven! Maybe that is why cricket rules India, they say. And at that moment, it felt so wonderfully true...
All these months we'd felt each word that had been said against the Indian team in Australia, and now, we felt we were a part of the celebrations down under. Although the best we could do was blast the radio playing in our car and guzzle down beer and hear our whooping echo back to us from the hills.
